God can never be reduced to a mere object for consideration

Came across this quote today by Peter Rollins in his book 'How (Not) to speak of God':

God can never be and ought never be reduced to a mere object for consideration, for in faith God is experienced as the ultimate subject. God is not a theoretical problem to somehow resolve but rather a mystery to be participated in.

Hmm, I'm not sure about this. As a scientist, I would regard that holding something up for consideration, and participation in its mystery, are one and the same. What characteristic of God precludes us from approach Him with our heads, as well as our hearts?

Agreed! To be fair to the guy, in the broader context around this snippet I've quoted, he's not saying that it's either or. Just that one is not enough, hence his use of 'mere'. I guess he's saying that we'll never fully understand God with either our heads or our hearts! Mystery!

Fair enough. Its just there are too many voices around at the moment which demand the either/or choice to be made.

Yeah, definitely. I think the angle he's taking is more anti Christian fundamentalism rather than than science.
